The King and the Mockingbird
Le Roi et l’oiseau
France 1980 / 83’
Polish voiceover
In the kingdom of Takicardia, everything must work out as the ruler wishes. The King wants to marry the Shepherdess from the painting, but she loves the humble Chimney Sweep. His opposition to King Charles is only the beginning of a memorable adventure!
The ruthless king’s ego is bigger than his name. Even though he is cross-eyed, everyone portrays him with regularly set eyes and the staff reassure him that he is second to none in shooting. Capturing the beautiful Shepherdess for someone like this should only be a matter of time, but things have turned out differently. The girl and her beloved Chimney Sweep get help in their escape from danger from the talkative Bird, while the blind musician rescues them from oppression with his unusual sounds. With such a team, even tigers and a mechanical robot stop being scary! This playful adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's story shows that the quest for freedom can be truly uplifting.
Did you know that…
the soundtrack to the film was co-written by Wojciech Kilar? In 1980, the Polish composer received the coveted Louis Delluc Prize for this score.
