Mirai

Mirai no Mirai

dir. Mamoru Hosoda
Japan 2018 / 100’
dubbing, English subtitles in cinemas

Kun is a pampered child in for a huge change: his baby sister Mirai is born. The boy’s parents focus all their attention on her. Before long, the boy discovers a secret garden and travels in time only to meet a future version of his sister.

When his baby sister is born, Kun’s life is turned upside down. The boy can’t contain his anger and jealousy. Unexpectedly, he discovers that a nearby garden allows time travel and he meets his relatives from the past and from the future. This is a great adventure for Kun, and an opportunity to learn about the history of his family. He sees his grandfather, who loved motorcycles, his mother, who – just like Kun – did not tidy up her toys, and his teenage sister. These meetings teach him empathy, balance, and compassion. Mirai is a heartwarming anime that emphasises the power of family bonds and affection, showing that relationships require constant self-growth.
