Barry Keoghan, who plays Bug, turned down a part in Gladiator II in order to star in Bird?
The rebellious Bug is a solo father to teenage daughter Bailey and her half-brother. The young father has little time for his children, so lonely Bailey seeks attention elsewhere. She befriends the titular Bird, who will help her spread her wings and believe in herself.
12-year-old Bailey lives with her father and older brother, Hunter in a small town in the east of England. Tattooed from head to toe, Bug is a loving but immature and irresponsible father. He is raising Bailey and Hunter on his own, parties a lot and is always looking for a new job, so he doesn't have much time for his teenage daughter. Sensitive and misunderstood by those around her, Bailey rebels against Bug and often runs away from home. One day, she meets the mysterious Bird. As they wander together in search of traces of the past, they both find the intimacy and freedom they long for in life. Andrea Arnold's Bird is a tender portrait of growing up in a hostile world. The protagonists' constant search for their place in the world is accompanied by expressive shots and music by the iconic English producer, Burial.
