11-year-old Santino's life is different to that of most children his age. His family has been running a circus for generations. Although the boy's everyday life is exciting, constantly being on the road can be tough.
Santino lives in the circus with his father, an animal keeper, his mother, an acrobat, and his brother, as well as many aunts, uncles, and cousins. His great-grandfather Ehe plays an important role in the boy's life, telling him colourful stories from his circus past. Santino travels across Germany in a caravan and has no permanent home. He has to change schools every few weeks, which makes it hard for him to make friends. As he gradually learns new tricks, Santino will soon have to decide on his future role in the family business. Circusboy explores the realities of life on the road and the importance of supportive community and sense of belonging.
