Did you know...
the film, which won the audience award at the Annecy festival, is based on Amélie Nothomb's book titled The Character of Rain? In it, the Belgian writer recounts the first three years of her life spent in Japan.
Amélie, a little Belgian girl born in Japan, didn't talk until she was two and a half years old. It was only when she tasted white chocolate, offered to her by her grandmother, that she developed a great appetite for discovering the world.
Every day, little Amélie, who suddenly begins to talk and walk, has more and more thoughts and questions swirling around her head. Who am I? What defines me? The girl dispels these doubts with the help of her grandmother Claude and her nanny Nishio-San. Amélie discovers the beauty of the surrounding nature, which changes with the seasons. She attempts to understand why her neighbour Kashima-San looks at everyone with so much menace. She also learns more about the customs of faraway Asia as she prepares for the O-bon festival, when the spirits of ancestors come to life and lanterns float on the water. In this poetic, intergenerational animation, Japanese and Belgian culture intertwine, and laughter blends with emotion.
