Callie and Minnie are final-year secondary-school students who, despite their many differences, are best friends. One day, an unexpected event leaves Minnie feeling as though the ground has been pulled from beneath her feet. Will she find her place in this new reality?
It is the summer of 2002 in North Little Rock. Callie is a popular girl from a wealthy family, brought up by her elegant mother, Helen. Living in her shadow, Minnie resides in a poorer neighbourhood, in a cluttered flat with her chaotic mother, a vet. Although they have little in common, Callie and Minnie are very close. But following a dramatic event, everything falls apart. Minnie tries to work out who she really is and rebuild her life. Helen begins to play an important role in it, and Minnie develops a complicated relationship with her. At the same time, Minnie meets Kat at a video rental shop. Their shared experiences quickly bring the girls closer together.
Mouse is a poignant reflection on loss and its impact on relationships between women. It is also a story about life going on, and about discovering your own identity.
