Dorothy Gale, a girl raised on a farm in Kansas, dreams of “the land over the rainbow”. Her dream may come true when she, along with her little dog Toto and the whole house, is swept away by a tornado to a marvellous land.
Unfortunately, the house lands in the wrong spot, making Dorothy the target of the Wicked Witch’s fury. Protected by the magical power of her ruby slippers, she soon becomes friends with Scarecrow, who has no brain, the heartless Tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion. Together, they follow the yellow brick road to the Emerald City to meet the all-powerful Wizard, who they hope will help Dorothy return home.
Description taken from the catalogue of the 4th American Film Festival.
Did you know that…
…in L. Frank Baum’s book, "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz", Dorothy’s slippers were silver, not red? Their colour was changed for the film because red looked better in the Technicolor used at the time.
