When twelve-year-old Georg arrives at an Alpine monastery, he has to adapt to completely new circumstances overnight. Although the start is difficult, he soon finds a loyal companion – a St Bernard puppy called Barry. But will he be able to cope when an influential pupil at the monastery school decides to take his four-legged friend away from him?
Following a dramatic winter trek across the mountains, Georg wakes up at a picturesque monastery in the Swiss Alps. In this cold, unfamiliar place, the boy must quickly adapt to the austere rhythm of the monks’ way of life. He finds moments of respite in the company of Resi, who works at the monastery hospital, and in looking after the St Bernard puppies her father is breeding. When Georg realises that one of the puppies has almost no chance of survival, he decides to save it. He names him Barry and looks after him in secret. When the truth comes to light, the boy’s and the dog’s future together is thrown into doubt.
Barry & Me is a touching story about the extraordinary bond between a child and a dog, and the courage to follow one’s heart – even when it means resisting established rules.
