Twelve-year-old Neneh is accepted into a prestigious ballet school in Paris. A new place, new friends, and totally unfamiliar rules mean that the girl has to quickly find her place in a world she had previously only dreamed of.

Neneh has loved dancing since she was a child: whether it’s hip-hop or ballet – nothing fazes her. She teaches herself by watching videos and practising after school. When she decides to take part in the auditions for one of the best ballet schools in France, she doesn’t expect to be accepted straight away.

At her new school, however, she discovers that talent alone isn’t always enough. Neneh stands out from the group because of the colour of her skin, and because she is not afraid to be herself, which doesn’t please everyone. Despite the obstacles, she has no intention of giving up – she practises even harder and does everything possible to prove that she deserves her place on stage.

… the film’s creators spent many months searching for a girl to play the role of Neneh? The director visited dance schools across France until, eventually, he heard the same name repeated by many young dancers: Oumy Bruni Garrel. The actress said that, just like the film’s protagonist, she too had experienced the difficulties of being a Black girl in the world of ballet.
