Best friends Minna and Flic have carefully planned the next few years of their lives: once they’ve finally finished their girls’ boarding school, they’ll go to university together – ideally Oxford or Cambridge. However, they know full well that at university, it’s not just grades that count. Assertiveness and, as their older friends say, ‘life experience’, are also important. So, the girls decide to set themselves on a fast-track to adulthood. Their first mission: to fall in love.
Life at a girls’ boarding school in the UK drags on monotonously, from one class to the next. The pupils try to fill their days by playing field hockey, taking part in the drama club, and – for the more rebellious ones – smoking their first cigarettes in secret, hiding from the teachers. Once every few months, there is some of excitement in the form of a visit from the neighbouring boys’ boarding school. Still, the boys cause as much embarrassment as excitement among the girls. Minna and Flic, inseparable friends, cannot wait to break free from the confines of the school; they are keen to discover the big wide world and live life to the full. First, however, they must face all the trials and tribulations of growing up, starting with falling in love for the first time. To get it over with as quickly as possible – and ideally so that it’s ‘just like in the films’ – the girls set themselves a challenge: they must fall in love with the very first person they lay eyes on. When the randomly chosen object of their affections turns out to be, to say the least, an unfortunate choice, their long-standing friendship is put to the test.
Extra Geography, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, is a timeless coming-of-age story, with all its joys and challenges. Tender and funny, it does not shy away from dry humour or awkward moments. Most importantly, it is a strikingly honest portrait of female friendship, full of more intense emotions and turbulence than many romances.
