The iconic opera Carmen is brought to the big screen through painterly animation. It is a timeless story of freedom, love, and courage, now told from a brand-new perspective.
Nineteenth-century Seville is a place buzzing with life – merchant ships dock at the harbour, and the sound of flamenco fills the streets. The city is sizzling not only in the heat, but also with conflict: stern soldiers are constantly chasing petty thieves, including thirteen-year-old Salva. The boy is fascinated by the free-spirited Carmen and her extraordinary voice. When a blind seer predicts that Carmen will die at the hands of a sergeant who is in love with her, Salva will do anything to prevent this tragedy. So he rallies other teenagers living on the streets of Seville, led by the fearless Belén. Will the group of friends manage to save Carmen and put an end to the conflict?
The story from Georges Bizet’s opera is given a new lease of life thanks to this visually enchanting animation. The imagery, rich in contrasting colours, combines with classical music to form a unique whole. Viva Carmen is a must-see not only for opera enthusiasts! The animation premiered at Cannes in the prestigious Directors’ Fortnight (Quinzaine des Cinéastes) section.
