Talented and determined teenager Fujino dreams of becoming a manga artist, while withdrawn Kyomoto rarely leaves her room, devoting herself entirely to drawing. United by their passion for manga, the two girls follow their dream of becoming artists over thirteen years, as their friendship grows and their artistic ambitions collide with the unpredictability of life.
Outgoing fourth-grader Fujino is admired for the comics she creates for her school newspaper. Everything changes when the work of her shy and talented classmate Kyomoto begins to attract attention. Educated at home because of severe social anxiety, Kyomoto has long admired Fujino’s drawings. When the girls finally meet, rivalry gives way to friendship, and they begin creating manga together. Over the next thirteen years, their relationship evolves as they navigate growing up, artistic ambitions and the unexpected turns of life.
Hirokazu Koreeda’s latest film is an adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s acclaimed manga of the same title and a tribute to a friendship born from a shared passion for creating. Look Back had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival.
